Federico Chiesa, one of the most outstanding Italian player of recent times, joined Liverpool FC in the summer of 2024 after completing a move from Juventus.
Chiesa was born on 25 October 1997 in Genoa, Italy. He is the son of the prominent Italian former footballer Enrico Chiesa, who was a striker for the Italian international side. His football journey started with the Tuscan amateur club Settignanese, before joining Florentina’s youth academy at the age of 10.
Florentina’s youth academy transformed him into one of Italy’s brightest prospects as he was soon moved to play alongside the U19S, where he scored a goal after seven (7) appearances for the side. In the 2015/2016 season, he made 23 appearances and scored 7 goals.
He was offered his first professional contract in February 2016. On August 20 2016, he played his first competitive game against Juventus, in which he was featured in the first half. His UEFA Europa League debut came against Qarabag in a 5:1 home victory, and he scored his first senior goal against the same Qarabag in the away game of the UEFA Europa League.
Chiesa scored his first Serie A goal on January 21 2017, in a 3:0 away victory against Chievo. He established himself as a regular starter for Fiorentina, as he consistently delivered goals and assists. In the 2018/2019 season, he scored his first hat-trick for the club in 7:1 victory against AS Roma in the Coppa Italia quarter finals.
Chiesa was awarded his first senior call-up to the Italian national team under the management of Di Biagio. He has gone on to feature in the UEFA Euro 2020, 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals, UEFA Euro 2024 and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
He was sent on a two year loan spell to Juventus with a buy option of €40 million plus €10 million in variable add ons. Chiesa marked his debut match for Juventus by delivering an assist for Alvaro Morata before being sent off the game due to a red card offence.
Three days later, he made his UEFA Champions League debut in a 2:0 home victory against Dynamo Kyiv; he scored his goal of the tournament against the same Dynamo Kyiv in the away leg. He scored his first Serie A goal for Juventus against Atalanta, a long distance screamer to help Juventus secure a point in the match.
In the 2023/2024 season, he set a personal record by scoring nine (9) goals in 33 appearances in Serie A. His achievements for Juventus include winning two Coppa Italia in the 2020/2021 and the 2023/2024 seasons, also winning the Italian Super Cup in 2021.
Liverpool FC reportedly signed Chiesa from Juventus on August 29 2024, for a transfer fee worth £10 million plus £2.5 million in add ons. He made his debut for Liverpool in a 3:1 UEFA Champions League away win against AC Milan; he came in as a substitute in the 93rd minute of the match.
Chiesa’s first goal for Liverpool came in the FA Cup third round against Accrington Stanley in a 4:0 victory that saw the club progress to the next round. However, he struggled for playing time under the management of Arne Slot.
Regardless, he became the second Italian player to win a Premier League medal after Mario Balotelli in the 2011/2012 season, as Liverpool won the league in his first season at the club.
In the 2025,2026 season, he scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool after coming on as a substitute for Florian Wirtz in the 88th minute against Bournemouth, which helped the Reds win 4:2. He was voted Liverpool’s player of the month for September after an incredible performance against Southampton and Crystal Palace.
