Florian Wirtz Liverpool’s record breaking signing joined the club in the summer of 2025 after establishing himself as one of the most exciting attacking midfielder across Europe.
Wirtz was born on May 3, 2003, in Pulheim, North Westphalia, Germany, where he developed a passion a passion for football at an early age. He joined the youth Academy of 1. FC Köln, which was the ground where he gained recognition as one of the brightest youngster in Germany.
He made move to Bayer Leverkusen’s academy in 2020, a transfer that raised so much traction in German football because of the rivalry between the two clubs. Regardless of the pressure, Wirtz adapted and continued his development in the new club.
His senior debut for Bayer Leverkusen was against Werder Bremen in the month of May, 2020 at just 17 years old. He scored his first goal for the club against Bayern Munich, making him the youngest goal scorer in the Bundesliga history.
Wirtz evolved into the creative heartbeat of Leverkusen’s attack, with his ability to unlock defense and create goal scoring opportunities even from tight angles. The role he played for the club made him one of Europe’s sought after young player.
The 2023/2024 campaign was his breakout season as he played an important role in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten title winning, and domestic double campaign, earning him the Bundesliga player of the season. His performance attracted interest from several elite clubs across Europe.
At just 21, he made five appearances for Germany at Euro 2024 and scored twice, including a goal off the bench in their quarter final exit which was against the eventual tournament winners Spain.
Liverpool FC paid a club record breaking fee in June 2025, of an initial £100 million for Florian Wirtz, with a potential £16.5 million on add ons. Making his transfer the heights in the history of the Bundesliga, and the sixth most expensive footballer of all time.
The transfer revealed the club’s belief that Wirtz could become one of the world’s elite midfielder, and foundation for Liverpool’s future squad. His start up game club was slow, but in January 2026 he displayed an outstanding performance scoring five (5) goals and delivering two (2) assist in just nine(9) appearance.
For the first time, he was voted voted the Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month. An award that marked him out as the most impactful player of the month.
