Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Ibrahima Konaté, with the French centre back joining on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Liverpool. The move, announced on Thursday, 18 June 2026, makes Konaté the latest piece in a busy summer rebuild at the Santiago Bernabéu under new head coach José Mourinho.
Reacting to his departure from Merseyside, Konate wrote this on his social media:
“Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams. Today, I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
“Representing this club has been an honour. We’ve shared incredible moments…highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever, none more painful than losing our brother Diogo.
“Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods of my life, but even through hardship, my commitment to this club never changed. During the toughest moments, I gave everything I had for this badge.
“To my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for helping me grow every single day.
“And to the supporters…thank you for your love, your energy, and your incredible support. Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted.
“I am deeply saddened that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.

The Deal: Free Transfer, Four Year Contract
Konaté arrives at Real Madrid on a free transfer after running down his contract at Anfield, which expired on June 30. He has signed a four year deal that ties him to the club until June 2030.
Reports out of Spain suggest his salary package will sit around €24 million gross per season, with a signing on bonus reported to be in the region of £17 million, a reflection of the savings Madrid make by avoiding a transfer fee.
Why Konaté Left Liverpool
Negotiations between Konaté and Liverpool over a new contract had been ongoing since 2023 but ultimately broke down. As recently as April, the defender suggested there was still a strong chance he would stay at Anfield, but sadly no renewal materialised before his deal expired.
Liverpool were reportedly unwilling to meet the financial terms required to keep him, with suggestions the club felt those resources were better invested elsewhere in the squad. Konaté also endured a difficult 2025/2026 campaign by his own standards, coming under criticism during Liverpool’s post title slump.
Over five years at Liverpool, Konaté made 183 appearances after joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, helping the club win the Premier League, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.
What It Means for Real Madrid’s Defence
Konaté steps into a backline that lost David Alaba and has dealt with persistent injury concerns around Éder Militão. He’s expected to compete for a starting centre back role alongside Antonio Rüdiger, who recently signed a one year contract extension and Dean Huijsen, with academy product Raúl Asencio’s, whose future is uncertain at the club.
Mourinho is said to be pushing for at least one more central defender before the transfer window closes, with names like Rúben Dias, Alessandro Bastoni, and Nico Schlotterbeck mentioned as possible targets.
At Liverpool, Konaté often partnered with Trent Alexander Arnold on the right side of the back four, a pairing he could potentially reignite at Madrid, since Arnold now plays for the Spanish club as well.
