Goalkeeper 25
Liverpool agreed to sign Mamardashvili in the summer of 2024 as a backup goalkeeper for Alisson Becker on a pre-contract, which required him to complete the 2024/2025 season with Valencia before the official move to Anfield in the summer of 2025.
Mamardashvili was born on 29 September 2000, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He ventured into football at an early age, joining the youth team of FC Gagra before moving to the academy of Dinamo Tbilisi, an iconic football club in Georgia.
After his promotion to the senior team of Dinamo Tbilisi, he spent the season on the bench; clearly, the club had a more experienced goalie than him. At the start of the 2019/2020 season, he was sent on loan to Rustavi to get more game time.
Mamardashvili made so much of an impact that it shows he was a player with qualities during his loan spell at Rustavi; he made 28 League appearances for the side and also helped them escape relegation that season.
At the end of the season, he was immediately sent on another loan move to Locomotive Tbilisi, a move that announced him to the world. He was the spotlight player during Locomotive Tbilisi’s UEFA Europa League campaign.
His performance against Granada got him on the radar of different scouts across Europe, although his side lost 2:0 in the Europa League third qualifying round of the tournament; his individual performance sang his praises.
Due to his consistently incredible performance, he received an award from the Georgian Football Federation as the Goalkeeper of the year. Obviously an indication that he is a talent that the world has eyes on.
He made another loan move to Valencia in the 2021/2022 season on a year-long loan contract with a buy option added to his clause. His pre-season performance impressed José Bordalás, the Valencia manager at that time, which led to given a starting role in the opening game of the season against Getafe.
On 13 December 2021, just a few months into his loan deal, Valencia confirmed a permanent deal for Mamardashvili on a 3-year contract expected to run until 2024, with an option for an additional year.
For his first season with Valencia, Mamardashvili made 18 senior appearances with 8 clean sheets to his record. He won the man of the match in three different games in his first season at the club. By May 2022, Marca named him in the LaLiga discovery team of the season.
The Georgian Goalkeeper exploded in his second season at the club as he featured in all 38 League games for Valencia without being substituted. At the end of the season, he has 42 appearances in all competitions and on three different occasions was selected in the LaLiga team of the week.
On September 4, 2024, Mamardashvili was nominated for the Yeshin Trophy as part of the 10-man shortlist for the Goalkeeper award ahead of the Ballon d’Or ceremony to be held in Paris. At the ceremony, he was ranked 11th for the award.
He made his senior international debut in 2021 and became Georgia’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. His performance during the UEFA Euro 2024 elevated his goalkeeping status, as he made a series of spectacular saves against Europe’s top nations.
On August 27th, 2024, Liverpool agreed to sign him from Valencia for a transfer fee of £25 million with an additional £4 million in add-ons, pushing the deal to £29 million. The Georgian goalkeeper signed a six-year contract with the Reds to see him at the club until the summer of 2030.
The agreement between Liverpool and Valencia was that the goalkeeper would complete the 2024/2025 season at Valencia before completing his move to Anfield ahead of the 2025/2026 season.
He made his debut for Liverpool in the third round of the 2025/2026 EFL Cup against southamptom that ended in 2:1 victory in favour of the Reds. On October 4th, 2025, he made his Premier League debut against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge that ended in a 2:1 defeat for the Reds.
The Liverpool Management sees him as the best replacement for the Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker is almost at the end of his contract with Liverpool Football Club.
