Dominik Szoboszlai the complete midfielder driving Liverpool’s forward joined the club in the 2023 summer transfer window, a move from RB Leipzig.
Szoboszlai was born on on October 25, 2000, in Székesfehérvár, Hungary. From a very young age football became a central part of his life due to the influence of his father Zsolt Szoboszlai, who played an important role in his son’s football abilities.
His football journey started at Fonix Gold FC, a Hungarian academy that specialize in developing young talent. His performance soon caught the attention of scouts from Red Bull football network, which lead to a move to the Austrian Club FC Liefering.
He had an outstanding performance at FC Leifering, scoring ten (10) goals in thirty three (33) games which earned him a promotion to Red Bull Salzburg. What stood out about Szoboszlai’s playing style was his creativity, vision, and ability to score from the midfield.
At Salzburg, he won multiple league titles and domestic cups while gaining experience in European competitions. His first goal for the club came in an Austrian Cup game against SC Eglo Schwarz, a game that ended 6:0 in favour of Salzburg
He scored on his Champion League debut for Salzburg against the Belgian side KRC Genk in a 6:2 victory. He finished his first season season for the club with 9 goals and 14 assists in 27 league matches, and was voted player of the season for the 2019/2020 in Austrian football’s top division.
RB Leipzig paid a transfer fee of €20 million in December 2020 to secure his move to the Bundesliga, but he was eligible to play in January 2021 making him the most expensive Hungarian player at that time. He was unable to feature in any match for Leipzig as a long term injury slowed down his progress.
Szoboszlai’s debut game for Leipzig was in a German domestic cup match against SV Sandhausen, where he scored just 3 minutes after being substituted in the 78th minutes. He evolved into a complete midfielder, helping the club compete at the highest level in Germany and Europe.
He was involved in 62 of RB Leipzig 68 Bundesliga fixtures across 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 season, and was appointed team’s captain of the Hungarian national team in November 2022.
Liverpool FC secured the signature of Dominik Szoboszlai in the summer of 2023, activating his release clause of £60 million to bring him to Anfield as part of the club’s midfield rebuild, making him the third Hungarian to make an appearance for the club.
He made his debut in the opening game of the 2023/2025 Premier League season against Chelsea that ended in a 1:1 draw. However he impressed the fans with his energy, technical quality, and commitment during games.
On the 3rd of September 2023 he scored his debut goal for the club against Aston Villa in a 3:1 victory, making him the first Hungarian to score for Liverpool FC. He had the highest number of chances created by a Liverpool player since 2003 in just nine (9) appearances.
Under the management of Arne Slot Szoboszlai still played top tier football whether operating from the central midfield or the attacking midfield his influence on games was always consistent. He played a key role in the club winning the the 2024/2025 English Premier League title.
Despite the signing of Florian Wirtz in the 2025/2026 season, Szoboszlai still showed his quality as he always plays a crucial role for the club leading their attack. He won multiple man of the match award and was awarded Liverpool’s player of the 2025/2026 season.
