Only few defenders in European modern football can transform a team like Virgil Van Dijk. Since his arrival at Liverpool in 2018, the Dutch Man has reshaped the defensive power of the team.
He was born on the 8th of July, 1991 in Breda, a city in Southern Netherlands. Football became a major part of his life as he spent his childhood playing street football, he developed confidence on the ball that later transformed his professional career.
Van Dijk joined the youth academy of Willem II, where his ability, and physical strength was noticed by the coaches. Unlike other elite footballers who became stars at an early age, his development was gradual as he had to work hard to earn his recognition.
He began his professional career with FC Groningen in the Netherlands Eredivisie where he made his senior debut in 2011 where his strength, composure, and ability to read the game immediately impressed the fans.
He made a move to Celtic F.C in 2013 which was a major turning point in his career where he won multiple Scottish Premiership titles, and praises for his dominance defensively.
His outstanding performance secured him a move to Southampton F.C in 2015, a move that laid the path for him to becoming one of the greatest defensive player in European football.
At Southampton, Van Dijk established himself as one the best Centre backs in the Premier league. His strength, pace, aerial power, and composure defined him as complete defender capable of handling attackers.
His versatile nature caught the eyes of Liverpool F.C, the club paid a world record breaking fee of £75 million to sign him him from Southampton, a transfer that immediately transformed the club’s defensive structure.
He played a major role in Liverpool’s 2018/2019 campaign under he management of Jürgen Klopp when the club lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy, defeating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.
Finished second second in the Ballon d’or ranking under Lionei Messi, voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year, and also collected the Premier League Player of the Season award were few of his achievements in his first full season with the club.
At the start of the 2020/2021 season, Virgil Van Dijk suffered a serious knee injury against Everton that kept him out of the squad for much of season.
However, he returned with more resilience after months of rehabilitation. He continuous dominance helped him sign a new long term contract with the club in the 2021/2022 campaign.
He holds a notable defensive achievement as one the Premier league defenders who went multiple seasons without being dribbled past regularly, and Liverpool’s best defensive player during their title winning era.
Currently he is the Captain of the team, which prove his leader qualities, and also him being one of Liverpool’s greatest modern day player.
