Defender 33
Ronald Araujo joined Liverpool on loan from Barcelona in the summer transfer window of 2026, as the club needed an experienced player to bolster the defence.
Biography
Araujo was born on March 7, 1999, in Rivera, a town very close to the Brazilian border. His Father is Brazilian-Uruguayan, and his mother is a Brazilian woman. His parents’ nationality clearly shows where his interest and passion for football emanate from, as Brazilians are lovers of football.
His parents’ support played an important role in his career, as the player mentioned the financial sacrifice they made to afford his first professional football boots and how they protected him in the earliest phase of his career.
Career
Ronald Araujo started his football career in his hometown club, Huracán de Rivera, in 2012 at just 12 years old. His performance at the club earned him a trial at Rentistas, a professional Uruguayan club in Montevideo.
He joined Rentistas in 2016 when he was 17 years old, where he eventually switched his playing position from a forward to a defensive player, which is still his current position.
His debut game for the club was against Segunda División side on September 24, 2016; he was brought in as a late substitute in the 1:0 victory. On December 9, he scored his first goal for the club against Central Español, as he scored the equaliser in the 2:2 draw.
He became a regular starter for Rentistas in the 2017/2018 season, ending the season with 14 appearances, including a hat-trick.
In the summer of 2017, Araujo joined Boston River, a club in the Liga Profesional de Primera División. On September 18, he made his debut for the club in a 1:0 victory, where he played as a defender. He played just 31 games for the side before moving to Barcelona.
La Liga club FC Barcelona signed Araujo from Boston River on August 29, 2018, for a transfer fee of €1.7 million plus an additional €3.5 million in add-ons. He was assigned to the Barca B squad until towards the end of the 2019/2020 season, when he was called up to Barcelona’s first team.
In the 2020/2021 season, he was assigned the number 4 jersey as he was fully integrated into Barcelona’s first team. He scored his first La Liga goal against Valencia on December 19, 2020, in a game that ended in a 2:2 draw.
Araujo’s early days at Barcelona were a great success, as he helped Barca keep 16 clean sheets in their first 21 games in the 2022/2023 season. Pundits described him as the perfect back man in Barcelona’s squad; he could partner with Christensen or even Koundé and still display intense composure.
Aside from being a brilliant defender, the Uruguayan man was a leader; on July 21, 2023, Barça announced him as their third captain, making him eligible to wear the armband in the absence of Sergi Roberto and Marc-André ter Stegen, who were the captain and vice-captain of the squad.
Araujo faced criticism from fans and the media in the quarter-finals of the 2023/2024 Champions League against PSG. His foul on Bradley Barcola in the first half earned a red card and left Barça with just 10 men to face the fierce French giants, resulting in a 4:1 defeat.
However, at the end of the season, he was offered a new contract, which will see him stay at the club until the summer of 2031. A few months later, he suffered another criticism from pundits after receiving a second yellow card against Chelsea in the Champions League for his tackle on Marc Cucurella.
According to the media, Araujo leaving the pitch in the first half reduced the Momentum of Barca’s players and also left an opening in the defensive line of the team, which eventually led to them conceding 3 goals.
The constant criticism led to him taking a mental health break to Jerusalem in December 2025; he returned to training a month later, missing a total of seven (7) games before his actual return.
Following Marc-André ter Stegen’s loan move to Girona in January 2026, Araujo was appointed the new captain of the squad, following his previous run as the third captain of the squad. For the season as captain, he helped Barca win the 29th La Liga title.
In the summer transfer window of 2026, Ronald Araujo completed a season-long loan move to Liverpool, with a buy option at the end of the 2026/2027 season. He made his debut for the Reds in their 2:2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on August 23rd, 2026.
Araujo is currently one of Liverpool’s reliable defensive options who can comfortably play as a centre-back and a right-back. His style of play matches Iraola’s tactics, from his physicality to his ability to stop dangerous attacks.
