Tyler Morton: From Liverpool Academy to Lyon

Tyler Morton’s Liverpool career was a story of patience, promise and the difficult reality of breaking into one of Europe’s most competitive midfields.

After years of development at Anfield, loan spells across the Championship and a European Under-21 Championship triumph with England, the midfielder eventually reached a point where the best next step was to build his career elsewhere.

His departure for Lyon on 5 August 2025 marked the end of a journey that began when he joined Liverpool’s academy at just seven years old.

For Morton, leaving Liverpool was not necessarily a sign of failure. Instead, it was an opportunity to turn years of waiting into a fresh beginning.

Champions League and Premier League Opportunities

Morton made his senior Liverpool debut on 21 September 2021, coming off the bench in a 3–0 Carabao Cup victory against Norwich City.

It was an important milestone for a player who had spent years working towards an opportunity at Anfield.

His progress continued in November 2021 when he started Liverpool’s 2–0 Champions League victory over Porto at Anfield. The youngster also featured in a 2–2 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur in December.

These appearances offered a glimpse of his potential and demonstrated the trust Liverpool were prepared to place in their academy graduates.

However, opportunities to secure a regular place remained limited.

Why Tyler Morton Struggled for Regular Minutes

Liverpool’s midfield was stacked with established quality, with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcântara competing for prominent roles.

For a young midfielder still developing his game, breaking into that group was never going to be straightforward.

Morton needed consistent senior football to continue improving, but Liverpool’s immediate ambitions meant that regular minutes were difficult to guarantee.

Loan moves consequently became an important part of his development, giving him the chance to experience the physical demands and tactical challenges of first-team football.

Blackburn Rovers and Hull City Loan Spells

Morton spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, making 46 appearances and gaining valuable experience in the Championship.

The following campaign, he joined Hull City for the 2023/24 season, where he made 41 appearances and scored three goals.

Those spells offered Morton something he could not consistently obtain at Liverpool: regular playing time.

Rather than spending another season primarily waiting for opportunities, he was able to develop his understanding of the game, improve his match fitness and take on greater responsibility in midfield.

The experience strengthened his case as a capable senior player, even if a permanent role at Anfield remained uncertain.

Arne Slot’s Arrival and Another Difficult Season

Morton returned to Liverpool ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, hoping to establish himself under new head coach Arne Slot.

However, competition for places continued to limit his involvement. He managed just five senior appearances during the season, with a shoulder injury also interrupting his progress.

Liverpool went on to win the Premier League title, but Morton did not feature in the league during their successful campaign.

It was a bittersweet situation for the midfielder. He was part of the wider Liverpool setup during a title-winning season, yet he had little opportunity to contribute on the pitch in the competition that mattered most.

For a player approaching a crucial stage of his career, the lack of regular football presented an important decision: continue waiting for an opening at Anfield or pursue a move that offered a clearer pathway to first-team minutes.

Tyler Morton Wins the European Under-21 Championship

Despite his limited involvement at Liverpool, Morton had another significant achievement in the summer of 2025.

He helped England win the European Under-21 Championship, adding an international honour to his growing experience.

The triumph demonstrated that his development had continued despite the challenges of securing a regular place at club level.

For Morton, success with England provided another milestone and a reminder that his career could continue to progress beyond the confines of Liverpool’s first team.

Why Tyler Morton Left Liverpool for Lyon

On 5 August 2025, Morton completed a permanent move to Lyon, bringing his Liverpool career to an end.

He departed having made 14 senior appearances for the Reds without scoring a goal.

Those numbers tell only part of the story.

Morton had joined Liverpool as a child, progressed through the academy and experienced the demands of senior football at one of the world’s most closely followed clubs. He had also spent two seasons developing away from Anfield and earned international honours with England.

Ultimately, the move to Lyon represented a chance to seek greater responsibility and build a career around regular first-team football.

For young players, leaving a club they have known for most of their lives can be a difficult decision. But ambition sometimes requires recognising when a different environment offers the best opportunity for growth.

Tyler Morton’s Liverpool Exit Was Not a Failure

Morton’s departure highlights one of the biggest challenges facing academy graduates at elite clubs: talent and potential do not always guarantee a long-term place in the senior team.

Liverpool’s expectations are exceptionally high, and competition for midfield positions can leave promising players with limited opportunities to demonstrate their abilities.

His journey also illustrates the value of loan spells. Blackburn and Hull gave Morton regular football, while his England Under-21 success provided another achievement during a period of transition.

Although he did not establish himself as a regular Liverpool first-team player, his time at the club formed an important part of his footballing education.

Sometimes, the next stage of a player’s development requires stepping away from the club that helped shape him.

For Tyler Morton, the move to Lyon was an opportunity to do exactly that.

His Liverpool chapter may have ended, but his journey as a professional footballer was only entering a new phase.
