Florian Wirtz after a Champions League night at Anfield.
Oliver Bierhoff has suggested that Florian Wirtz could thrive at Barcelona under Hansi Flick, with the former Germany international believing the Florian Wirtz midfielder has the quality to succeed in different footballing environments.
Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 and remains one of the most highly regarded young players in European football. While his adaptation to the Premier League has attracted considerable attention, Bierhoff insists he has the ability to succeed outside England as well.
Speaking to Sport Bild, Bierhoff said:
“I actually trust him with several clubs. When he went to England — as I estimated him — I also said that he is not going crazy now because it is another country.”
He then named Barcelona as a potential destination where he would like to see Wirtz play.
“I would like to see him at Hansi Flick in Barcelona, for example. He has room there, he has great football teammates.”
Bierhoff’s comments are particularly interesting because of his previous association with both Wirtz and Flick during their time with the German national team. He clearly believes Wirtz’s technical qualities and ability to operate between the lines could suit Flick’s football at Barcelona.
However, Bierhoff’s remarks should not be interpreted as confirmation of an ongoing transfer. There is currently no indication of negotiations between Liverpool and Barcelona over Wirtz. The German midfielder remains under contract with Liverpool until 2030.
For Liverpool, the priority will be to help Wirtz establish himself fully at Anfield. The club invested heavily in bringing him to England, and the expectation remains that he can become one of the team’s key creative players for years to come.
Wirtz has already shown with Germany that his confidence and attacking influence remain intact, recently producing a goal and an assist against Serbia. His challenge now is to consistently reproduce that level of performance for Liverpool.
Barcelona may be an attractive theoretical destination, but Liverpool supporters will hope Wirtz has a long and successful future on Merseyside.
