Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard on touchline during Aston Villa vs Liverpool
Steven gerrard has admitted that he wishes he had stayed at Liverpool after learning that Jurgen Klopp was going to become the club’s manager.
Gerrard left Liverpool in 2015 to join LA Galaxy, bringing an emotional end to his legendary career at Anfield. However, Klopp was appointed as Liverpool manager just a few months later.
Looking back, the former Liverpool captain admits he would have taken a gamble on staying had he known Klopp was coming.
“If I would have knew Jurgen [Klopp] was definitely going to come, I didn’t know at that time when I made the decision [to leave Liverpool],” Gerrard said.
The Liverpool legend believes things could have been very different if he had been aware of the club’s plans.
“If I knew he was going to come, I would have gambled and stayed and tried to impress Jurgen and maybe have that opportunity at the back end of my career.”
Gerrard ultimately made the decision to leave England and continue his career in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy. But with the benefit of hindsight, he now believes staying at Anfield could have been worth the risk.
“But unfortunately I made a decision to move. In hindsight, I would have stayed and took the gamble.”
What Could Have Happened?
Gerrard’s comments naturally raise the question of what might have happened if he had remained at Liverpool.
Klopp quickly transformed Liverpool after his arrival, building a high-intensity team based on pressing, energy and attacking football. The German manager eventually guided the Reds to the Champions League title in 2019 and their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020.
Gerrard never got the chance to work under Klopp as a Liverpool player, but his comments suggest that he would have loved the opportunity to experience the German’s methods during the final stage of his playing career.
For Liverpool supporters, it remains one of football’s great “what if?” scenarios: Steven Gerrard under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Would Klopp have found a role for the Liverpool captain in his side?
We will never know, but Gerrard clearly wishes he had taken the gamble.
