One day, Virgil van Dijk will walk away from Anfield — and when that moment finally arrives, even Liverpool’s famously composed captain admits it will be difficult to hold back the emotions.

Virgil van Dijk acknowledging the Liverpool supporters at Anfield
For a player who has become synonymous with Liverpool’s modern era, Van Dijk’s journey at the club has been about far more than trophies, clean sheets and individual accolades. It has been about leadership, standards, resilience and, ultimately, leaving a legacy that inspires those who come after him.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Liverpool captain opened up about what it means to represent the club, the demands placed on players at the highest level and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
Van Dijk: Hard work is the bare minimum
For Van Dijk, representing Liverpool requires more than talent. The 35-year-old believes every player must demonstrate commitment, resilience and character.
“The bare minimum is hard work, never give up, and be a good human being.”
He also emphasised the physical and mental demands of competing at the highest level, particularly during periods when Liverpool are playing every three or four days.
“You have to understand what it then means to turn up each and every three, four days and to give everything that you got.”
Despite the demands, Virgil van Dijk described the experience as something he continues to embrace.
“It’s a process and it’s something that’s exciting and I feel very privileged to be able to be in a position to do so.”
‘It will be a very emotional day’
Virgil van Dijk also acknowledged that his eventual departure from Liverpool will be an emotional moment.
The captain has often been perceived as calm and composed, but he admitted that leaving the club will inevitably bring out a different side of him.
“You’re going to see it though in the future eventually when I have to walk out the club and it will be a very emotional day. It’s been an incredible journey.”
Since joining Liverpool, Van Dijk has played a central role in the club’s success, helping transform the team into one of Europe’s leading sides while establishing himself as a respected leader.
Van Dijk’s greatest ambition: inspiring the next generation
Beyond trophies and individual achievements, Van Dijk believes his greatest legacy would be inspiring young footballers.
“That’s the biggest achievement you can do, to leave a legacy behind that inspired other kids.”
He reflected on his own childhood, when Brazilian icon Ronaldinho was one of the players he looked up to.
“How amazing is it when a young kid says I want to be like Virg? Like I was when I was young, I wanted to be like Ronaldinho.”
For Van Dijk, that is ultimately what legacy is about: leaving an impact that extends beyond the football pitch.
His achievements at Liverpool have already secured his place among the club’s most significant modern players. But his desire to inspire the next generation shows that he is thinking beyond statistics, trophies and personal recognition.
Van Dijk wants to leave Liverpool having not only achieved greatness, but having inspired others to believe they can achieve it too.
